The Varikstraat residential facility in Amsterdam Southeast accommodates drug addicts with psychiatric problems, socalled dual diagnosis clients. People who continue their substance abuse after treatment and have difficulty living independently in society are not uncommon in addiction rehabilitation programmes. Adequate facilities that combine housing with appropriate care are generally lacking.
This is the group for which HVO-Querido arranges sheltered or assisted living in Amsterdam Southeast. The dual diagnosis project is a partnership of Jellinek, RIBW PCHooft and HVO-Querido. The dual diagnosis project accommodates 18 people: 14 in the Varikstraat residential facility itself and 4 in satellite residences in the immediate vicinity.

Taking into account our clients’ special circumstances we feel it would be inappropriate to ban smoking, but as a care organization we also need to consider the health-related aspects. Not only for residents but also for the staff who really suffer from the poor air quality,’ says Jasper de Leth. ‘The room was already equipped with a VisionAir2 air purifier, but the nuisance remained because there are always people hanging out there and our personnel smoke too.’
The building engineering department began seeking a solution to capture the smoke closer to the source. Following a trial period this search resulted in the installation of a Smoke ’n Go Mezzo smoking cabin in the living room. Thanks to the design and the transparency of the cabin, you never feel isolated from the rest of the people in the room. That, along with the fact that the smoking cabin worked so well, was the deciding factor.
Smoke ‘n Go Cabin A smoking cabin can be a solution when allocating a room as a smoking area is not an option. By installing a smoking cabin and designating it as a smoking area you solve that problem. Euromate sees sending clients or staff outside to smoke as an outdated solution. A smoking cabin gives smokers the opportunity to smoke while protecting non-smokers.
