There is a double restaurant in Bielefeld, Germany: “Erbsenkrug” and “Abendmahl”. The “Erbsenkrug”, a two-storey eaves house built in 1709-1711, is the oldest inn in Bielefeld, located in the Schildesche district, founded in 939. The current owner Sebastian Höptner bought the “Erbsenkrug” in 2017 and opened it at the end of 2017 after extensive renovation work. In the adjacent building, originally built as an extension of the Erbsenkrug – 250 years younger than the Erbsenkrug – Höptner had a company called “Weintaverne” since 2009. Since 2017, this location has provided the elegant ambiance for a completely new menu concept: “Because of the proximity to the church square and the parish hall, the focus on wine and our menu (everyone eats the same), the name Abendmahl was born.”

THE CHALLENGE

Like the rest of the catering industry, the Erbsenkrug and the Abenmahl were and are also hard hit by the corona crisis. What was the biggest challenge for Sebastian Höptner and what measures were taken? “We decided not to offer take-away meals because we could no longer guarantee the quality of the food. In this case, we were able to make good use of the possibilities for short-time working. Urgent renovation work has been carried out.”

How did you hear about air cleaners against coronaviruses in indoor spaces, we ask Sebastian Hoptner. “My predecessor had already installed an air cleaner in the Erbsenkrug. Probably from 1985 to get rid of cigarette smoke. When I approached Euromate I got a good offer. Since we were able to make use of the government subsidy on the one hand and the installation was no problem on the other (as there are already sockets available), we were happy to opt for the Euromate offer.”

THE SOLUTION

If you visit the appealing homepages of Erbsenkrug and Abendmahl or follow them on Facebook, you will find information there that both restaurants are equipped with Corona air cleaners. “We try to build the greatest possible trust for our guests with the information on the homepages and in the booking confirmations,” confirms Höptner.

But do these devices fit into the special ambiance of his restaurants? Höptner makes it clear without any problems: “Since the Euromate air filters were already installed in the Erbsenkrug, nothing has changed in the atmosphere – except that the old air filters still had a wood veneer look. In the Abendmahl an air filter hangs from the ceiling and one is on a display, since it was not possible to place it in the ceiling. You don’t hear the fan at all and the sound is drowned out by the background music anyway!”

At some point, the corona pandemic will be behind us. Do we still need air cleaners in the hospitality industry? “Even after the pandemic, air cleaners will make sense, because I think better air will be created for allergy sufferers too. This doesn’t bother me, but our restaurant manager had a noticeable improvement in his allergy issues. I can wholeheartedly recommend the VisionAir MicrobeFree to other restaurants, precisely because it is currently cost neutral.” Indoor air quality is something Sebastian Höptner is taking to the new normal. And he would like that to be the case elsewhere as well: “My vision would also apply to the school classes. Unfortunately, it was decided in Bielefeld to use air filters that are only installed in a few classrooms and also cost an additional €18,000 each.” In the Erbsenkrug and at Abendmahl, guests and employees can look forward to virus-free, clean air.

“I can wholeheartedly recommend the VisionAir MicrobeFree to other restaurants, ”

“Our restaurant manager experienced a significant improvement in his allergy problems.”
