Florence offers homecare, assisted living care, nursing home care, youth healthcare, advice and other services in Delft, The Hague, Leidschendam-Voorburg, Rijswijk, Voorschoten and Wassenaar. Convalescent home Gulden Huis in The Hague is a Florence facility. Gulden Huis offers living accommodation for people who, due to an increased need for care, can no longer live at home.

THE CHALLENGE

Facility Manager and Head of Outpatient Services Edwin van Seters, member of the Florence team for more than 25 years, had been seeking a solution for the odour problem for some time. Particularly in the morning, during patient washing and changing, unpleasant odours from incontinence material were present in public areas. These lingering odours resulted in a far from optimal environment for the clients, visitors and employees. During his search for a solution, Edwin van Seter set his sights on finding a structural, lasting solution that did not involve the introduction of chemical substances into the air. He saw the use of a ‘scent pole’ system that disperses fragrance oil, for instance, as a chemically greasy solution. It also proved difficult to find a fragrance that everyone found acceptable. Convalescent home Gulden Huis has already been using the VisionAir ElectroMax air filters in the various smoking areas since 2003. During the presentation of the CarbonMax filter the decision was made to conduct a test to observe the effect of this new filter and see whether it could provide a solution for the odour problem.

THE SOLUTION

Convalescent home Gulden Huis has already been using the VisionAir ElectroMax air filters in the various smoking areas since 2003. During the presentation of the CarbonMax filter the decision was made to conduct a test to observe the effect of this new filter and see whether it could provide a solution for the odour problem. A test with two VisionAir CarbonMax air filters took place in a newly renovated wing during the summer of 2011. The unpleasant odours, particularly of the incontinence material, were largely eliminated. Initially the general impression was that this was attributable to the recent renovation of the wing. However, after the units were switched off for a day the difference was clear and convincing: everyone agreed that the equipment did indeed solve the odour problem. The employees of convalescent home Gulden Huis were closely involved in the test. Because they work in the various wings ona daily basis they are in the best position to assess the effect. During the test period it became clear that the care taken by the personnel plays a significant role (carefully depositing incontinence material in sealable provisions). Following the test phase, calculations were made to determine the needs for all floors and negotiations started with buyer Mark ten Broeke.
